Why the Brand Matters: What You Need to Know Before You Buy Your Next Dog Chew

We heard you. Fur parents (like ourselves) want dog chew products that are safe.  So we created a company that delivered on that promise. As many know, we provide all natural products with single ingredients, cleaned with water and baked in commercial ovens. But what many don’t know are the additional precautions we take to ensure our products are free from bacteria.  With the recent pig ear salmonella outbreak, we have been receiving calls from customers, so we wanted to take a minute and reiterate our five-step process that ensure our products are safe.

Step 1: Supply Chain

Nature Gnaws controls the entire supply chain. We know where our products come from, how they are cleaned, baked and shipped. When first starting the company, Jay and I flew to South America and partnered with local farmers to ensure our products are of the highest quality. We call this process Farm to Fur Baby and it sets us apart from any other dog chew company in the industry.

Step 2: Irradiation

Before any chew arrives at our Florida headquarters, they are irradiated to ensure our chews are free of any bacterial contamination, including salmonella and e-coli. Irradiation may sound like a scary word but in reality majority of the food we eat and the medical devices we use are irradiated.  The FDA has evaluated the safety of irradiated food for more than 30 years and has found the process to be safe. The World Health Organization (WHO), the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) have also endorsed the safety of irradiated food. These additional steps are not required in the industry but we believe it is necessary to keep our products safe.

Step 3: Lab Testing

After our products are irradiated, we send it to Midwest Laboratories where they provide Nature Gnaws state-of-the-art microbiological tests. These tests provide an extra level of protection, ensuring all products are free from salmonella, e-coli and other bacterial contaminations. We never cut corners and we never will, despite the additional costs and time involved.

Step 4: Hand Packaged/Hand Inspected

Every single chew is hand inspected and packaged. Despite our growth, this process continues. Our team reviews the size and shape of every chew to maintain consistency. In fact, chews that do not meet our specifications get donated to local rescue societies. Click here to learn more about our Gnaw it Forward program.

Step 5: Cleaning and UV Machines:

At the end of each work day, we clean our packing tables with vinegar to maintain a sterile work environment. Additionally, we employ the use of UV Light Emitting Machines for disinfecting 99.9% of all germs. Often used in hospitals, this technology is a safe way to disinfect.

The health and safety of every dog is the cornerstone of our business. We started this company with the intention of providing transparent products and processes. Every consumer deserves to know what they are giving their pets.

We thank you for your support and the opportunity to provide your dogs the best quality chews on the market.
